So now ShitBook works for me. Well, I think so... I’m still wary of how often I’m checking in, how much stuff comes dribbling down that line. My new addiction is to ruthless management of a trickle of updates, photos that I actually find I want to know. So now I browse with a twitchy, itchy trigger finger hovering over that ‘delete friend’ button, ready to cull at any moment...no pressure...

Since that night there have been legal battles over the iPhone name, venomous exchanges on the interweb over the decision to lock it down, iBricks and silly bitches suing because they have nothing better to do. And, of course, the inevitable squealing of anti-Mac piglets suckled strongly onto Bill Gates' swollen teats (he says, ducking).

An announcement was made last week that introduced a change to the way we will live our lives. Metaplace is coming...

The site looks kinda hokey, but that's 'cos it's aimed at its initial target market - cheesy gamers. Eventually though, it will affect each and every one of us, for Metaplace could be just the kick in the arse that Virtual Reality has been waiting for.

The US Military - via the DoD - is currently investigating the potential use of moths as the frontline in stealth surveillance. The idea is to plant "micro-mechanical systems inside the insects during the early stages of metamorphisis" so that they become, essentially, remote-controlled. Recording devices would then be implanted and some lucky chap in a darkened room somewhere secret in the festy bowels of the US military would fly the poor bugger into...I dunno...caves in Afghanistan I guess...

T-shirts have been around for almost a hundred years, and for more than half that time they've been garnished with messages that reflect and project the wearer's personal taste and identity. As the kids of a world in which the clutter of media messages seems to intensify year-on-year, we're becoming quite adept at branding ourselves - we're, quite literally, wearing our hearts on our (short) sleeves.

The attacks came in multiple forms - overloaded web servers, published images of Soviet soldiers on government pages and a hacked fake message on the ruling party's website seeking forgiveness for the statue fiasco - all of which would seem to suggest there was at least Russian motivation if not government involvement. The Kremlin has denied such dastardliness however, and the Estonian government has since lowered that nervous finger. Inherent in such online crime though is the hiding and faking of tracks and Estonia may never know - or at least be able to prove - who exactly is to blame, despite the contextual inference that may suggest otherwise.

There are a few threads that weave in and out of my thirty-odd years, one of those being the Cricket World Cup. One of the more interesting ones for me was the 1996 series hosted by India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Interesting not because of the performances or results, but the way in which I followed the games. The time difference was a bit rough and we didn't have Sky at home so I was reduced to listening to the game in bed on the wireless. I have a delicious memory of Jeremy Coney and Brian Waddle spending the best part of five overs discussing the sandwiches they'd had for lunch that day. Two of the best, no doubt.

Since that fateful day in the 80's when the ZX81 moved in I've stumbled through a couple of decades of technology consumption, leaving a dusty trail of discarded beige computer casings and screens in my wake...towards...I dunno...just the next funky little box I guess. Whatever 'They' come up with next for me to use, consume and discard. I'm probably a little more addicted to gadgets than the average bear, but I doubt this pattern is too different to most. Looking back, the most interesting and disturbing feature of this acquisition and disposal cycle is that I've rarely needed (not wanted - I'm addicted, remember) any of this shit until it's hit the store shelves. But the point is, I'm a Technology Victim - and I doubt I'm alone.

In capturing and documenting our lives online we're providing a potential surveillance feed of ourselves - and of those around us. When you chuck in geo-tagging using cell towers, and the time and date saved with your files, it's possible that you are providing whoever wants to see it with a complete record of where you've been, when you were there, who you were with and what you were doing. And as network speeds and devices improve, the ability to stream video from webcams in your house or in your hand means that this record will be available real-time...
