It’s one week into the New Year and I’m feeling damn inspired; the most since my autumn crack-up, maybe even the most I’ve felt in any New Year. Thankfully, this time the inspiration has been chummed up with a rather healthy bellyful of willpower. Something I’m normally frustratingly unfamiliar with - I’m typically an enthusiastic starter of things, but rarely make the first bend, let alone finish. Not sure why, but who cares - this year willpower is upon me and I must say I’m rather enjoying the company.

Having moved to a new town, and with time on my hands, I felt the time was ripe to enrol myself in a night school class. I confess to fancying myself as a linguist, though I really shouldn't as my conversation skills in reality only extend to please and hello in about 5 or 6 languages, a paltry collection of Japanese phrases and just enough Italian to get by and crack the odd joke.

The title of ‘best thing’ can be an ephemeral one. I can recall bestowing this title upon such random (and frankly useless) objects such as a fab faux 70s plastic beaded curtain that I bought from iko iko on k rd about 10 years ago (looked great with my orange op-shop curtains), and a netball-sized mirror ball purchased from the Thursday markets at Auckland University (anyone remember those awful Hannibal Lecter tees with the ‘tastes like chicken’ slogan?).

Last year cycle imports to New Zealand outstripped car imports. To do my bit for the statistics I went out and purchased a bike. This was something of a step since my last bike was a 1950s BSA that I bought off a guy from Raglan when I was at Uni. Arriving home with my shiny new Marin commuter bike I felt a sense of excitement. Not only would I be doing something for the environment, but I may actually lose the Christmas cheer I have been carrying around with me for the past month or so.

Panadol were taken, and mum hopped in the bath to relax and ease the pain.
Shortly after hopping in the bath however, bubs decided he wanted out. The ambulance was called, but didn’t come quick enough… Dad, who reportedly looked a little green around the gills, had to stand in as Doc, and delivered the little guy on his own, on the bathroom floor.

Many pages have been dedicated to the reasons we travel and seek meaning to the pursuit of stamps in our passports. At the time I left NZ in 2003 it didn’t get much more complicated than wanting to seek out a few different experiences. I think this scenario is true for a lot of us.
