Get Your Raid Out

If you take a gander at Amit Lal’s Cornell University web page you’ll notice that he is currently on leave, working for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).  Sounds like a far-fetched geek-squad kinda place to me, but it’s actually the central R&D organisation for the US Department of Defense i.e. The Big Guys.  Who you best be scared of.

So what’s Amit up to over there?

Well, the US Military – via the DoD and using Amit – is currently investigating the potential use of moths as the frontline in stealth surveillance.  The idea is to plant “micro-mechanical systems inside the insects during the early stages of metamorphosis” so that they become, essentially, remote-controlled.  Recording devices would then be implanted and some lucky chap in a darkened room somewhere secret in the festy bowels of the US military would fly the poor bugger into…I dunno…caves in Afghanistan I guess…

They are already well on their way with this technology – having already reached similar success in rats and sharks (remote controlled fucking sharks!!!) – with the next step being to figure out how to use the moth’s kinetic energy and metabolism to power the implants and surveillance tools.

Leaving aside the strict vegetarian, animal-loving side, this is all obviously very cool.   But, come on Bush et al – what the hell are you doing!?  Two million people in your country are affected by bankruptcy from health bills each year, a million and a half can’t afford to pay their mortgages and a third of your adults are obese!  I guess as long as you can keep people distracted with meaningless stories about meaningless people and convince them that mass surveillance is a good thing then you can slip this kinda shit under the radar.

Good god, get a grip.  Stop wasting money on forcing your rotten ‘model’ society upon countries that don’t want it.  Remote-controlled moths and lardy bankrupt kids?  Who on earth would want that?
